We have had this examined by a professional, and we can tell you that it is an original photograph, processed in a photographic darkroom. There is a discolored bar below the photograph itself, which we believe was likely a piece of tape or paper that was placed on top of the photo, to cover something on the original photograph, over which the Babe signed, resulting in variations of the ink color in the signature. It was likely covering a credit by the original photographer or photographic studio. Because of the rarity of this image, we have not been able to ascertain who took the photo. The photo was then rephotographed, with the change that Babe Ruth made to personalize it, and processed in a dark room, to produce this limited edition photograph, then handed to a child in a hospital bed. How rare is this image? See the photo of the image research we did across every internet image in the world, over 6.2 billion images. We seem to have the only one ever seen online.
The photo itself was taken on "Babe Ruth Day", which itself was a rare day, a rare tribute to Babe Ruth, which happened in 1947, just months before the gifting of this photograph, and just a little over 1 year before Babe Ruth died. Though sources don't necessarily cite cause of death, it was reported he was suffering with throat cancer, which may have been the impetus to these last images, appearances, and his visit to the hospital to this child, during Christmas of 1947. So there was never enough time for anyone to reproduce this image en masse, resulting in its rarity.
April 27, 1947- “Babe Ruth Day” at Yankee Stadium drew a crowd of more than 58,000 fans to honor the ailing Hall of Fame star suffering from throat cancer. In the game, Sid Hudson of the Washington Senators out-duels New York Yankees starter Spud Chandler winning the game by a score of 1-0.
This photograph we are selling was given on Christmas Day to a child in a NYC hospital in 1947, and has been in the family since that time.
Information added December 27, 2012 by the owner of this item:
“This picture of Babe Ruth was given to Thomas H. on December 25, 1947 when Thomas was in the hospital with pneumonia. Thomas was just over three years old at the time. The Babe was visiting children in the hospital who were paralyzed and sick as he was known to do at Christmastime. Thomas was a hemophiliac on top of having pneumonia. Because of this picture, Thomas took up baseball when he got older even though he was suffering from hemophilia.”
"We haven’t been able to figure out which hospital yet but it was either in Westchester County or the Bronx. If we can find that info I’ll sent it to you once we do."
